|
INHALATION HEALTH RISKS AND SYMPTOMS
OF EXPOSURE: Inhalation of high
airborne concentration can irritate mucous membranes, cause headaches,
sleepiness and death. |
NATURE OF HAZARD:
|
EYES: |
High vapor concentration or liquid
contact causes irritation, tearing and burning. |
|
INGESTION: |
Swallowing Methanol is life
threatening. Onset of symptoms may be
delayed for 18 to 24 hours after ingestion.
Swallowing even small amounts of methanol may cause blindness and
death, other effects may be nausea, headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, and
visual disturbances ranging from blurred vision to light sensitivity. CANNOT
BE MADE NONPOISONOUS. |

MEDICAL CONDITIONS GENERALLY
AGGRAVATED BY EXPOSURE: NA |
|||
|
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: |
|||
|
INGESTION: If medical aid is not immediately available
DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Get medical
attention immediately. Do not give anything
to an unconscious or convulsing person.
Keep victim’s head below hips while vomiting so victim does not
breathe the vomitus into his lungs. Ingestion of as little as 60 ml may cause
blindness or fatality. |
|
INHALATION: Remove patient to fresh air. Give artificial respiration. Get medical
attention immediately. |
|
SKIN AND EYE CONTACT: |
|
EYES:
Immediately flush eyes with large amounts of water for at least 15
minutes. Hold eyelids apart to ensure complete flushing. Do not attempt to neutralize with chemical
agents. Get medical help immediately. |
|
SKIN: Remove contaminated clothing and wash
under shower for 15 minutes. Seek
medical attention if irritation occurs.
Get medical attention if irritation persists after washing. Do not
wear clothing until washed. |
NOTE TO PHYSICIANS: Provide
standard methanol ingestion treatment.
To prepare the antidote, make a solution using 100 ml or 100 proof ethyl
alcohol (grain alcohol) in 2000 ml of water and give 1.5 ml/kg body weight or
100 ml for an average adult. Following
this at 2 hour intervals for four days, give the antidote (0.5-1.0 ml/kg of
body weight, orally or intravenously) to reduce the metabolism of the methanol
and allow time for its excretion. Blood
ethanol levels should be 1.0-1.5 mg/ml.
|
SECTION VII- PRECAUTIONS FOR
SAFE HANDLING AND USE |
|
STEPS TO BE TAKEN IN CASE MATERIAL IS
RELEASED OR SPILLED: Remove all
sources of ignition, avoid breathing vapors, and remove with inert
absorbent. Dispose of as hazardous
waste. |
|
WASTE DISPOSAL METHOD: Dispose of in accordance wtih federal, state, and local regeulations
regarding pollution. NOTE: Empty containers can have residues, gases,
and mists and are subject to proper waste disposal as above. |
|
PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN HANDLING
AND STORING: Keep away from heat,
sparks, or open flame. Store in
tightly sealed containers in a cool dry well-ventilated place away from
incompatible materials. Vent
containers if needed on extremely warm days to relieve pressure. Do not store in direct sunlight, above 120°
F or discard in trash compactor. |
|
SECTION VIII- CONTROL MEASURES |
|
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: Usually not required if it is used as it is
described on the label. If necessary, wear a NIOSH approved respirator

gloves which are recommended by glove supplier for protection against
materials in Section II. |
|
