SECTION IV- FIRE AND EXPLOSION
HAZARD DATA (continued) |
|
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Dry chemical, alcohol foam or CO2. |
|
SPECIAL FIREFIGHTING PROCEDURES: Do NOT use forced stream as this could
cause fire to spread. Firefighters
should wear self-contained breathing apparatus when fighting fires containg or around this product. shut off all
sources of ignition, if possible. Keep
containers cool with water spray to prevent rupture. Ventilate area. Evacuate all non-trained personnel. wear full
protective clothing including helmet.
Contain spill and dike area if possible. |
|
UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION
HAZARDS: Firefighters should wear SCBAs in positive pressure mode with full face
shield. Vapors are heavier than air
and may travel long distances and accumulate in low areas or spread along
ground away from handling site.
Eliminate all sources of ignition as vapor may ignite. Carbon oxides may be formed. |
|
SECTION V- REACTIVITY DATA |
|
STABILITY: Stable, however, could form peroxides of
unknown stability. Avoid open flames
and temperatures above 120°F
or direct sunlight. |
|
INCOMPATIBILITY (MATERIALS TO AVOID):
Avoid strong oxidizing agents, (peroxide, dichromate, permagnate,
chlorine, ect.) strong acids caustics and halogens. Nitric acids, sodium hydroxide, alkali
metal hydroxides. |
|
HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION OR
BYPRODUCTS: Combustion may produce
carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and reactive hydrocarbons (aldehydes, aromatics) |
|
HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION: Will not
occur. |
|
SECTION VI- HEALTH HAZARD DATA |
EFFECTS
OF OVER EXPOSURE:
|
EYES CONTACT: Can cause severe
irritation, experienced by stinging and discomfort or pain and redness,
tearing, blurred vision and conjunctivitis. |
|
SKIN CONTACT: Prolonged or repeated contact may cause
discomfort and local redness, also can defat the skin which can lead to dermatitis, itching,
inflammation, and possible secondary infection. |
|
SKIN ABSORPTION: Evidence has been reported that
2-butoxyethanol may be absorbed through the skin. |
|
INGESTION: This product may be harmful or fatal if
swallowed. May cause abdominal
discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
2-butoxyethanol is considered a poison by ingestion. Do not induce vomiting, because aspiration
into lungs can cause severe chemical pneumonitis or
pulmonary edema/hemorage which can be fatal. |
|
INHALATION: May cause irritation of the resipratory tract, experienced as nasal discomfort and
discharge, with chest pain, coughing, headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness,
drowsiness, disturbed vision, and unconsciousness, euphoria, contracted eye
pupils, tremous, sezures,
coma, respiratory arrest and sudden death could occur as a result of long
term or high concentration of vapor.
May also cause anemia and irregular heart rhythm. Repeated or prolonged exposure may cause behavorial changes. |

SECTION VI- HEALTH HAZARD DATA
(continued) |
|
SYSTEMIC AND OTHER EFFECTS: Human
systemic effects by inhalation: nausea, vomiting, headaches, nose tumors,
unspecified eye effects.
2-Butoxyethanol has been reported as an experimental teratogenic with reproductive effects. |
|
EMERGENCY
AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: |
|
EYE CONTACT: In case of contact with liquid or vapors,
wash eyes with water
for at least 15 minutes, lifting eyelids to ensure thorough
rinsing. Remove contact lenses if
worn. If irritation persists, CONSULT
PHYSICIAN. |
|
SKIN CONTACT: Remove contaminated clothing,
wash exposed area with soap and water.
Remove contaiminated clothing and launder
before rewwearing.
If irritation presists seek medical advice. |
|
INHALATION: Remove victim from contaminated area to
fresh air. Keep warm and at rest (in
the recovery position). If breathing is weak, irregular or has stopped,
commence artificial respiration.
Oxygen may be beneficial.
CONSULT PHYSICIAN. |
|
INGESTION: Never give anything to an unconscious
person. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Aspiration of materials into lungs due to
vomiting can cause chemical pneumontis, which can
be fatal. Give vegtable
oil or a charcol slurry to retard absorption. If spontaneous vomiting occurs, keep head
below hips to prevent aspiration of liquid into lungs and monitor for
breathing difficulty. Keep person warm
and quiet. CONTACT A PHYSICIAN
IMMEDIATELY. |
|
SECTION VII- ENVIRONMENTAL AND
DISPOSAL INFORMATION |
ACTION TO TAKE FOR SPILLS/LEAKS: Ventilate area, especially low places where
heavy vapors might collect. Extinguish
all ignition sources. Contain spill and
cover with inorganic absorbent material.
Collect spilled material. place into an approved DOT container for disposal. Clean up residue with water. Refer to other sections of the MSDS for
information reguarding physical and health hazards,
respiratory protection, ventilation, and personal protective equipment.
|
WASTE DISPOSAL METHOD: Reclaim by distillation if possible or
remove to permitted waste disposal facility in
accordance with local, state and federal regulations. For small spills, dry inorganic material on
plastic in direct sunlight and then place in the landfill. For large spills, remove to permitted
disposal facility. |
|
ENVIRONMENTAL DATA: No data available. |
|
SECTION VIII- CONTROL MEASURES |
|
HANDLING AND STORAGE
PRECAUTIONS: Store in tightly sealed
containers. Keep away from heat,
sparks and open flame. Do not get in
eyes, on skin or clothing. Do not
breathe vapor, mist or gas. Do not
store or transfer to unmarked container.
Do not throw empty containers in trash compactor. Do not store in direct sunlight. Store containers below 120°F. Read label before using. Do not smoke when handling or using this
product. Do not throw empty container
into fires. |
|
SECTION IX- SPECIAL PROTECTION
INFORMATION |
RESPIRATORY
PROTECTION (SPECIFY TYPE): Select one of
the following NIOSH approved respirators based on airborne concentration of
contaminants and in accordance with OSHA regulations: Full-face organic vapor and acid gas
respirator, full face supplied air respirator, full face pressure demand self
contained breathing apparatus.
PROTECTIVE
GLOVES: Any lined non-permeable rubber
gloves like buna or nitrile.
EYE
PROTECTION: Wear unvented
goggles during operations in which exposure is likely. Wear full face shield.
